Youth and student groups led by Anakbayan are marching to EDSA today to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 “People Power” uprising that overthrew the US-Marcos dictatorship three decades ago.

“Ang pag-alsa ng mamamayan sa EDSA ay hindi lamang istorya ng dalawang pamilya o ng iilang personahe. People power is the story of a people who fought against tyranny and for freedom,” said Anakbayan National Chair Vencer Crisostomo.

“Inangkin na ng mga Aquino ang EDSA bilang kwento ng pagbagsak at pagbangon ng kanyang angkan. The current generation of youth will not allow the ruling clique to yellow-wash history and hide the role of the people in toppling the dictatorship,” said Crisostomo.

Anakbayan said the Filipino youth and people must resist the ruling Aquino clique’s highjacking of the EDSA people power to serve its selfish interests.

The group said that the Noynoy Aquino has no moral ascendancy to claim the legacy of EDSA because his regime has presided over many of the same crimes committed by the Marcos dictatorship before him.

“With the persistent human rights violations, lumad killings, corruption, cronyism, unabated tuition and other fee hikes, and puppetry to foreign powers, we can say there is no real difference between the Marcos dictatorship and the Aquino administration,” said Crisostomo.

He said the Filipino youth and people must reclaim EDSA and continue the spirit of People Power by fighting for the democratic right to education, decent wages and jobs, land for the tillers, and civil liberties that continue to be denied the people 30 years after the EDSA uprising.

“The real essence of people power is the fight for national liberation and genuine democracy for all. Dapat patuloy itong ipaglaban ng kabataan at mamamayan. Dapat ipatuloy ang people power,” said Crisostomo.

The youth group also called for the public to reject the candidacy of Bongbong Marcos, the son of the dictator, who will only rewrite history to redeem his family and restore the late dictator’s corrupt and abusive leadership if he wins.

“No more Marcos! We deposed the dictator 30 years ago. We do not want another Marcos in Malacanang,” said Crisostomo.
