Responding to Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales recent statement about the existence of a “super number” of corrupt officials in government, youth group Anakbayan urged the Ombudsman to look into the corruption cases involving top Aquino admin officials and allies.
“Aquino is the most corrupt of them all. He set up a scheme for the systemic plunder of public funds through discretionary and lump sum allocations in the form of PDAF and DAP to favour admin allies,” said Anakbayan national chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.
Denouncing “daang matuwid” as a sham that only worsened corruption in government, Crisostomo pointed out how Aquino only went after opposition officials charged with corruption while defending admin officials involved in scandals.
He pointed out Budget Secretary Butch Abad who is touted as the mastermind of the pork barrel scam, Transport Secretary Joseph Abaya and the anomalies with the MRT contracts, and suspended Police Director General Alan Purisima, among others.
The youth leader also took a swipe at Aquino’s anointed successor Mar Roxas who he said will only continue Aquino’s corrupt and incompetent ways. “Roxas was responsible for rotten MRT deals and DILG pork barrel in the guise of “bottom-up budgeting,” he said.
He said a Roxas presidency will not make Aquino accountable for all his crimes against the Filipino people. He recalled that it was in fact Roxas who as a Senator pushed for the pardon of Joseph Estrada who was the first Philippine president to be convicted for plunder.
Crisostomo also cites the worst levels of smuggling under Aquino as further proof of administration corruption. “Data from the International Monetary Fund shows smuggling tripled from $7.9 billion in 2009 to $26 billion in 2014. This further debunks Aquino’s claims of a ‘clean government,’” he said.
“All this crowing about corruption in government by Ombudsman Morales is empty if it does not look at the one on top. Her anti-corruption drive will also be a sham if it does not take any real steps against Aquino himself and admin allies,” said Crisostomo.
