Cebu City in 1949

Cebu City in 1949 from the LIFE photo archive on Google: that bulging body of water to the left of the city has been swallowed today by the government’s reclamation project:

A lot of other fascinating historic photos of the Philippines can be viewed over at Google though most of the images already uploaded are apparently shots taken during the Second World War. Meanwhile, here’s another photo of my birthplace Cebu City taken shortly after the war. I’m wondering how this place looks like today:

  1. Nikay: Yes, perhaps we can try asking our elders if they can still remember where that place is today. I certainly will.

Wenna: Or at least a fifth of the first photo is… I think myself lucky to be able to pass by Kawit Island everyday now that it’s part of SRP.

  2. there are alot of old and new photos being juxtaposed together in the USC Cebuano Studies Center. Browsing there, you might actually see where this second pic might have been taken. But in my gut, i am not an older, i think this was somewhere plaza independencia, or between city hall and the basilica. but then, again its lucky guess. ;-)
