Spurious Section in Iloilo Wikipedia Entry

In August, when I launched this blog, I expressed my admiration for Wikipedia because of its wide coverage, which is no doubt a result of its collaborative nature where “most of the articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link.” I added that this also builds-in a downside in the form of potential vandalism of articles and misinformation.

Today, I found one more reason for those who uncritically use Wikipedia for reference to be more careful. This is from the Natural Resources section of the Wikipedia entry for Iloilo, a province in the southern Philippines:

There are no natural resources left in Iloilo. After the Orcish invasion in the town of Pototan(as seen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) all trees, rivers, mountains were devastated and used for the purpose of the invasion, which in return made Iloilo the biggest toilet bowl in the world. ■
